“Akaiya meets all of her challenges with a loud yell and a grin, so we can’t help but do the same!”
Akaiya was born on a Wednesday, by emergency c-section, at a little hospital in Chicago. We were not aware of her diagnosis before she was born. On Friday she stopped breathing several times so she was transferred to a larger hospital with a neonatal intensive care unit.
The doctors at the smaller hospital thought that Akaiya was born a bit early, and that was why she was having issues. The team from the larger hospital took one look at her and knew that she had a chromosome abnormality. That started our roller-coaster ride into the land of trisomy!
We received an official diagnosis 2 weeks after Akaiya was born. She spent a month in the NICU, and during that time we were told all of the typical statistics about children with T18. Akaiya must have been tuning them out during all of their lectures, or she’s just a really stubborn little chick, because here she is 10 years later
Akaiya is a super loud, super fun, super sassy 10 year old girl. She loves people (especially boys…) and loves to make new friends. Akaiya attends a private school for children with special needs, and absolutely loves it there! She has her challenges for sure – the biggest being an uncontrolled seizure disorder. Akaiya meets all of her challenges with a loud yell and a grin, so we can’t help but do the same!
